South Congaree House of Pizza - West Columbia, South Carolina

21Jun2023: We recently moved into town and have a habit of trying every local pizza place that we can. That said we were looking forward to trying one of the highest rated places in town. Unfortunately, I have to say that this restaurant's food fell flat and here's why:

Food: 3 stars: Ordered the vegetarian stromboli, the sauce although strong with garlic, had no other taste to. Then the dough was bland and slightly overcooked -1. My wife ordered a tossed salad that had a mushy tomato in it, shredded lettuce and a few onion slices -1. The mozzarella sticks were good and the kids spaghetti was good for a kid because of the flat sauce.

Service: 5 stars: Our server was for sure the best part of the dining experience. Julie, i believe. As packed as the place was, she was still very present, understanding and kind. Then the cashier had southern charm as well.

Atmosphere: 3 stars: It's very dim lit in the restaurant, almost feeling like the light bulbs are fading out -1. That flooring made me regret looking down at it because it's so old and beat -1. Lastly, its just too loud, is the kind of place where you'll need to shout to speak across the table. Places that have been around for a long time should be financially secure enough to do renovations when they are needed.

Based on other reviews it seems as though the awesome staff is the real reason the locals may give ratings that are so high. Nevertheless, the taste/quality of food needs to be honestly considered for reviewing as well.

South Congaree House of Pizza offers more than its name suggests, featuring a diverse menu that goes beyond just pizza and Italian dishes. During my visit, I sampled an appetizer platter of mixed fried foods, including cheese sticks, fried mushrooms, and okra. For my main course, I chose the pasta mixture, which includes stuffed shells, ravioli, manicotti, and meatballs, complemented by a trip to the salad bar.

The restaurant was clean and tidy, providing a pleasant dining environment. The food was satisfactory; it wasn’t particularly outstanding, but it was decent enough. The highlight of the experience was the friendly and attentive service from the waitstaff. The establishment exudes a Southern country charm, creating a welcoming atmosphere that encourages patrons to linger and enjoy the company. Overall, South Congaree House of Pizza is a cozy spot with great service, making it a nice place for a casual meal.

We went right after hurricane Helene it and a lot of people were out of power so we expected it to be busy and we were prepared to wait at least an hour for our food. However, we were pleasantly surprised and maybe spent an hour maybe a little longer, but definitely not more than an hour and a half from start to finish which was amazing given how packed they were! Our server was very sweet, and very overwhelmed but still handled our table with efficiency and a smile on our face. Of course she forgot a couple of things but the girl was handling a full dining room a long with a million to go orders so I completely understood. I got the spaghetti combination, a Greek salad and we had a few appetizers, I cannot remember what my boyfriend got but I believe it was the ravioli. I have been coming to this restaurant for well over 15 years and it never disappoints. The food is always amazing with generous portions that I always have leftovers and eat for like a day and a half after I come here. The desert options are also very good. The only thing that I could ever complain about this place is that I remember about ten years ago or so they used to sell beer and wine I believe and I definitely wish they did now but I understand that that is not their fault I will always come back for the food!!

Excellent service. The pizza has a great taste. It's always so fresh. The staff is always friendly and ready to help. The wings are really flavorful & my husband loves their chef salads. Actually, I have tried more than a few items on the menu, and everything is delicious!

The lunch specials were absolutely amazing - the pizza and chicken along with the salad were fantastic. The staff was extremely friendly and the food came out hot and very quick. Well done definitely a place to check out!

My family has been eating here since they opened in South Congaree. And the food has always been great. Oddly enough, it wasn't until recently that we actually ordered a pizza though. We have now ordered our second in less than a week! The meatlovers is excellent! Highly recommend giving it a try! Don't skip out on dessert either. Everything I've tried has been well worth it!

We love going here!! The food is sooo good & you get your moneys worth. Everybody is so nice. Just a perfect atmosphere, especially if you want to unwind. You are treated like family.

This may be a hole-in-the-wall joint, but it is a place you'll want to visit for some good eats!
This was recommended to me by a customer I was visiting in the area .. I actually drove right past it the first go round, but glad I found it when I turned around.
Staff was so pleasant, with the "sweethearts" and the "sweeties", but you can tell they were sincere when they spoke to you.
I ate a simple grilled chicken breast plate with rice and grilled veggies, and boy was it good. Perhaps not fancy nor with a fancy presentation, but who needs that when the dish is so delicious. A great portion - I'm full size at 6'4" / 240 - and this filled me up well. Price is absolutely fair. Quaint atmosphere if not plain, but again, the people and food are on point.
Also has a salad bar that I rather enjoyed!
